Stable Block Full Structural Rebuild

When this stable block project arrived with us, the original build had already failed. The structure had to be stripped back entirely before any quality work could begin — and from that point, ARC rebuilt it properly, from the ground up. The finished building is a multi-bay timber stable block with a fully installed pitched roof, consistent timber cladding across all elevations, and a layout built exactly to the client's specification. Structurally sound, cleanly finished, and handed over ready for immediate use. This is the kind of project that matters to us — not the easiest start, but the right result.

Overview

A full transformation of a troubled stable build — stripped back to nothing, rebuilt properly, and delivered to a standard that will stand for decades.

This project came to ARC after the original construction had failed to meet the necessary structural standard. Rather than patch over the problems, the decision was made to strip the entire build back and start again. That kind of honesty about the situation is rare, and it's exactly the kind of project ARC is built for — coming in, taking ownership, and doing the job right.

The finished stable block is a multi-bay timber structure with a continuous pitched roof line, individual stable bays arranged around a central yard, and a clean, consistent cladding finish throughout. It looks exactly as a well-built rural structure should: purposeful, proportionate, and properly made.

The challenge

The original build had fundamental issues with its structural framework — the kind of problems that can't be concealed with finishing work. Posts, bearings, and connections that aren't right at the outset will move, settle, and fail over time, and in a structure that houses animals and is exposed to the Lancashire weather year-round, that simply wasn't acceptable.

The entire structure had to come down before any quality work could begin. That's a difficult message for any client to receive, but it's the honest one. Once stripped back, ARC were able to assess the full picture, plan the rebuild properly, and begin laying a framework that would actually last.

OUR APPROACH

1 / Strip-back & structural assessment

Before any new work could begin, the existing structure was fully stripped back. Each element was assessed — identifying what had failed, why it had failed, and what a proper rebuild required. No shortcuts, no guesswork.

2 / Timber framework — ground up

The primary timber framework was constructed from the ground up: sole plates set level, posts plumb, and each structural connection made properly. The bay layout was built to the client's exact specification — the right dimensions, the right spacing, in the right positions.

3/ Roof structure & covering

With the frame true and solid, the roof structure was installed across the full span of the building. The continuous pitched roof — finished with a dark profile metal sheet — gives the stable block its clean, unified appearance and provides long-term protection against the elements.

4 / Cladding & external finish

Timber cladding was applied consistently across all elevations, giving the building a warm, natural finish that sits comfortably in its rural setting. Stable doors and openings were positioned and finished to spec, with the internal courtyard laid out to allow easy access to each bay.

5 / Final check & handover

Once complete, the full structure was checked against the client's specification before handover. The building was handed over fully roofed, finished, and ready for immediate use — no snagging list, no follow-up visits required.

The bigger picture

A stable block isn't a garden shed. It's a working structure that needs to perform reliably in all weathers, hold its form over years of use, and do its job safely around horses and people. The temptation on a project like this, especially when brought in to fix someone else's work, is to do enough to make it look finished and move on.

That's not how ARC operates. Every timber structure we build is treated as a long-term investment for the client, which means getting the framework right before anything else goes on top of it, and not cutting corners on the elements that won't be seen once the cladding is on.

The Result

The completed stable block comprises a structurally sound timber framework built plumb and level from the ground up, with a fully installed continuous pitched roof system providing complete weathertight coverage across the entire span of the building. Timber cladding has been applied consistently to all elevations, delivering a clean and durable finish throughout, while stable doors and openings have been properly hung and finished to the client's exact layout specification. The internal courtyard is laid out for easy day-to-day access to each bay. The building was handed over complete and ready for immediate use — no outstanding work, no return visits required.
